Our First Go-Ride Session at the Meridian Showground
What a glorious day! It was an early start as I was assisting the Coach for the Novice Session as a British Cycling Young Volunteer, and the session started earlier than usual at 9am. I arrived at the Meridian Showground in Cleethorpes at 8.30, where I met with the Coach and another Young Volunteer, Euan. Also Becky & Duncan, who are going to be Coaching in the future, and Cameron who also helped throughout the Novice Session. We coned off the parking area, and set up ready for the Novice Riders.
Euan, Cameron and rode with our small group of novice riders, offering support and encouragement. The younger riders were really excited to be able to ride around a “proper race track”. And then they focussed on one handed riding. It was fun singing “Heads Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and doing the actions whilst riding, and all the riders developed lots of confidence riding single handed. We played Chinese Whispers several times, trying to get the number from the back of the line to the front, and were accurate every time except for once! Bradley won the “Star Rider” session trophy for all of his effort to ride one handed, especially as at the start of the session he had said he couldn’t ride one handed at all.
We all thoroughly enjoyed riding in the sunshine, and it was great to help our younger club members grow in confidence in their skills, both old and new. Ending the session on a high with lots of drinks and cake!
